J1772 is the standard AC charging connector used across nearly every EV sold in North America — the plug you'll find on most home wallboxes and everyday public Level 1/2 chargers.
What it's for
J1772 handles Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging only — it's not a fast-charging connector. Even Tesla vehicles, which use their own connector for Supercharging, can accept J1772 via an adapter for everyday AC charging.
Why it became universal
Standardizing on one AC connector meant any EV, regardless of manufacturer, could use the same home chargers and public Level 2 stations — a level of interoperability that never fully existed on the DC fast-charging side until NACS.
Where you'll see it
Home wallboxes, office parking garages, shopping center Level 2 stations, and the AC half of most CCS Combo connectors all use the J1772 physical shape.
Can a J1772 plug fast-charge a car?
No — J1772 is AC-only by design and physically incapable of DC fast charging, which is why CCS was created by adding separate DC pins alongside a J1772-shaped head.
